Inside the Build

What Goes Into a Barndominium

A barndominium starts with a steel shell. From there, the interior is fully custom. Open floor plans, vaulted ceilings, large windows, full kitchens and bathrooms, lofts, and whatever else fits the way you want to live. Some clients want a simple layout. Others want something that looks and feels like a high-end custom home on the inside with the durability of steel on the outside. We build both.

Many of our barndominium clients also want a shop or storage bay built into the same structure. A dedicated space for equipment, a boat, ATVs, or a workshop that is attached to the living area but separated by a wall. We build those configurations all the time.

Barndominiums have become one of the most popular builds in the Texas Hill Country and it is easy to understand why. You get the structural durability of a steel building with a fully custom living space built inside. Lower maintenance than a traditional wood frame home, faster to build, and designed around how you actually want to live on your land. HCBR Texas is a barndominium builder in the Texas Hill Country with 40 years of experience. Barndominiums are one of the builds we are best known for. We have built a lot of them out here and we know how to get them right.

Built for the Land

Why Build a Barndominium in the Texas Hill Country

The Hill Country is a good fit for barndominiums. Large rural properties, acreage with room to build, and clients who want a home that can actually handle the environment. Steel holds up against the Texas heat and weather in ways that wood frame buildings at larger spans cannot match.

And because barndominiums combine living space with functional utility space, they make a lot of sense for how people actually use their land out here.

How We Work

A Written Price That Does Not Change

Every barndominium project starts with a written scope and a price that does not change. We handle all site work, foundation, framing, and systems. We offer the same three completion tiers on barndominiums that we offer on every project.

Tier 1

Turnkey

We finish everything, dirt to doorbell. You move into a completed barndominium.

Tier 2

Sweat Equity

You handle the interior finish yourself and save money on labor. We take care of the heavy lifting.

Tier 3

Combination

We take it as far as makes sense, you handle the rest. A split that fits your budget and skills.

Frequently Asked Questions

Barndominium Questions

How much does a barndominium cost to build in the Texas Hill Country?

Cost depends on size, finish level, and your site. A simple layout costs less than a high-end finish-out, and rural site work can add to the total. We come look at your land and give you a written price that does not change.

Is a barndominium cheaper than a traditional house?

Often, yes. The steel shell goes up efficiently and you can save more by handling interior finish work yourself through our sweat equity option. The savings depend on the choices you make inside.

How long does it take to build a barndominium?

Most barndominiums build faster than a comparable custom home because the steel shell goes up quickly. The interior finish drives the rest of the timeline. We give you a realistic schedule in writing up front.

Can I have a shop and living space in the same barndominium?

Yes, and a lot of our clients want exactly that. We build a finished living area and an attached shop or storage bay separated by a wall, all under one roof.
